Morsbroich Museum was the first museum in North Rhine-Westphalia to dedicate itself to the acquisition and presentation of contemporary art after World War II. Significant exhibitions of international artists, such as Yves Klein, Lucio Fontana, Louise Nevelson, Andy Warhol and Robert Motherwell, have been shown here. Parallel to its exhibition activities, the museum strives to expand its existing collection by purchasing quintessentially contemporary works of art and sculpture, amassing an impressive collection of about 400 paintings and sculptures as well as 5000 prints over the course of the last fifty years.
Morsbroich Castle, home to the avant-garde museum, is situated in a vast, well-kept nature park with a sculpture garden, located just 4 km from the Best Western Leoso Hotel Leverkusen. First recorded in 1220, Morsbroich was the seat of the Teutonic Knights from 1619 to 1803. In 1774 Ignaz von Roll demolished the medieval castle and replaced it with a baroque palace. In 1857 Friedrich von Diergardt, a silk manufacturer from Viersen, took over the house and added two wings to it in 1885. The city of Leverkusen acquired Morsbroich Castle in 1974. Today, it houses this art museum.
